If At First You Can't Compete, Legislate, Legislate Away

The liberals are at it again. Here are some of the Democrats who have talked about reinstating the fairness doctrine:

-Nancy Pelosi
-Steny Hoyer
-John Kerry
-Dennis Kucinich
-Dianne Feinstein
-Dick Durbin

This isn't the first time since the abolition of the fairness doctrine that liberals have attempted to bring it back. In 1993 the Democrat controlled Congress realized the impact that Rush Limbaugh was having on the political landscape and sought to reinstate the fairness doctrine. Rush fought back and the Democrats dropped the idea.

Now the libs are once again trying to bring back the fairness doctrine. They have failed to compete on talk radio and want to legislate themselves onto the air waves instead of leaving it up to the free market. I wonder if the libs would want to apply the fairness doctrine to all other mediums of entertainment?

Conservatives have been complaining about a liberal bias in the media, Hollywood, and academia for years. However, conservatives never thought of restricting liberals right to free speech. In fact, Republicans were the ones who abolished the fairness doctrine.

In response to a media dominated by liberals, conservatives did the only thing they could do: compete. Fox News was started in 1996 and has become the top rated cable news network on television. Alternatively, Democrats have responded to a conservative dominated AM radio by propping up Air America. However, unlike Fox News, Air America failed miserably.

Liberals can not compete against conservatives on talk radio and are slowly losing their grip on the television news media. Now, they've abandoned the principles of a free market and are considering reinstating the fairness doctrine to stifle their opposition.

Here is a quote from Bill Ruder, former assistant secretary of commerce under JFK, "Our massive strategy was to use the fairness doctrine to challenge and harass the right wing broadcasters, and hope that challenges would be so costly to them that they would be inhibited and decide it was too costly too continue". That's the fairness doctrine in action! Liberals? Hardly. Stalin would be proud.
