Leave it to the French to think that running is another form of American cultural imperialism. The reaction by the French to President Sarkozy running strikes a chord with me because I myself am an avid runner.
I am a D1 track athlete and personally love the fact that Sarkozy enjoys running. However, I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around the rejection of running by the French liberals and elites. Who could find running threatening? It's exercise! Aren't these the same people who loath the fat and lazy American? Who's fat and lazy now?
I think the reaction by French liberals to President Sarkozy's running hobby shows how uncomfortable and on edge they are after Royal's defeat. The liberals are so on edge that they could find running threatening! If liberals would embrace running maybe the conservatives wouldn't beat them in the presidential race next time.
Assuming Sarkozy's running isn't an elaborate scheme to brainwash people into being goose stepping Fascists, it does show me something about the President. Running is a very trying test of physical, as well as mental strength. It is also a very individualized and empowering kind of exercise that pits a man against himself. Sarkozy seems to appreciate this, and my admiration for him grows. I wonder who would win in a race: Clinton or Sarkozy?
