Hitler this, or Hitler that. A friend of mine told me he's had it with hearing everything and everyone compared to Adolph Hitler. I can understand his frustration. Both sides use Hitler and WW2 for their own political purposes. It seems like any liberal who can't formulate a coherent argument against the President calls him Hitler. To me the comparison is breath-taking; it's almost fun for liberals.
Here are two examples of liberal Hitlermania that I can remember recently. MoveOn.org put together a video on its website comparing President Bush to Hitler. Senator Keith Ellison likened the President to Hitler and compared September 11th to the Reichstag fire.
However, liberals aren't the only ones using Hitler for political purposes. Conservatives go on and on about the 2008 Olympics as China's "coming out party" and compare it to the 1936 Olympics in Nazi Germany. Conservatives also compare the appeasement of Iran and the inaction of the global community to their pursuit of nuclear weapons to Nazi Germany.
While both sides will use Hitler for their own purposes, only the conservative's comparison makes any sense. So in the spirit of WW2 comparisons I would like to make my own that i haven't heard expressed, but have no doubt that it has been expressed.
Looking to the future of Iraq and the current situation in Iran, it is easy to see what liberals are trying and will try to do: they want to scare America away from using military force because of Iraq. In the aftermath of WWI the European powers were so devastated by the war that it drove them to appease Hitler until war was already upon them. While Iraq can in no way be compared to the amount of devastation caused by WWI, I do think it is worth noting the timidity that come out of post-WWI Europe, and will come out of post-Iraq if we don't win.
We must win in Iraq. Liberals will beat America over the head with the Iraq War again and again, just like they do with Vietnam. If America loses it's balls post-Iraq we won't be able to take on enemies such as Iran until its too late. We can't wait until Iran wants "breathing room" and Israel is a smoldering crater. We must win in Iraq and act now to, at the very least, destroy Iran's capability for nuclear weapons.
