Democrats Deserve Some Credit

It might be difficult for me to admit, but the Democrats take-over of Congress has actually produced some good in Iraq. The war was at an all time low, and violence at its peak, at the end of 2006. We were all being told that Iraq was “hard work”, and that we need to “stay the course”. However, it became obvious at the end of 2006 (even to me as a conservative) that the course was looking really terrible.

Then, in come the Democrats, and the war policy changed. Rumsfeld was, rightfully and much to my dismay at the time, fired for leading a failed war effort. The president was forced to change his war policy, and Sec. Gates was brought in to clean up the mess. The surge is finally changing the conditions on the ground in Iraq. Gen. Petraeus went from training Iraqi soldiers to managing a failed war effort, and he is beginning to turn the war around.

Obviously, Democrats would have liked nothing better than to end the war effort and bring the troops home. However, this new strategy is a direct result of the Democrats taking Congress. It may not have been the result the Democrats wanted, but it is better than what we had before. If Democrats hadn’t sold their soul to the anti-war left they could take advantage of the success of the surge and claim it as a result of their being elected to office, because it is.

It is yet to be seen how effective the surge will be long term. In the end, the surge may fail and the Democrats would have made the right political move by aligning with the anti-war crowd. However, if the surge succeeds in providing sustainable security in Iraq, in the words of Dem. Rep. James Clyburn, “it would be a problem for us”.

The Democrats may find that they should have taken a lesson from the British House of Commons in 1942. In 1942 the House of Commons narrowly failed a no confidence vote in Winston Churchill. Churchill was driven to appoint Gen Montgomery to lead the war effort. In November 1942 Montgomery defeated Rommel and started to retake Africa. Notice how the opposition party at that time only wanted a new strategy for victory, and not a retreat. Petraeus may turn out to be Republicans white knight, but the Democrats could have owned his success if they hadn’t invested so heavily in opposing the war.

A World Without Consequences Would Be Nice

Liberals' ultimate and unifying goal is to be able to make decisions without consequences. Whether it's on foreign policy issues or cultural issues, a life without consequences is something they strive for. Unbeknownst to liberals, all actions have a reaction. A world without consequences would be nice, but its far from the reality.

Look at the Democrats plan for an Iraq retreat. Rep. John Murtha plans to add an amendment to the defense appropriations bill that would set a 60 day time line to pull U.S. troops out of Iraq. All of the Democrats at the YouTube debate were competing to see who could retreat from Iraq the fastest. Of course, this isn't anything new from the blue side of the aisle. But what happens when you ask them about the future of Iraq? Vague ideas about "terrorist strike forces" and "redeployment" get tossed around. But what does that mean? They have no clue what they want after Iraq. They think there is no consequence to us leaving. What about genocide? Sen. Barrack Obama even went as far as saying genocide is not a good enough reason for us to stay in Iraq: "Well, look, if that's the criteria by which we are making decisions on the deployment of U.S. forces, then by that argument you would have 300,000 troops in the Congo right now — where millions have been slaughtered as a consequence of ethnic strife — which we haven't done".

Rep. Murtha's credibility grows greater with another amendment he would add to the bill: Murtha plans to close Guantanamo Bay. According to an editorial written in the Washington Times, Murtha has no plan for what will happen to the terrorists after Gitmo is closed. What are Democratic plans beyond closing Guantonama Bay? They want to give them the right to challenge their confinement in U.S. courts! Something that can't be done due to the fact that they are prisoners of war and do not have rights as U.S. citizens. Again, Democrats are acting on a narrow emotion without considering what the consequences might be if they were released or brought into our prisons.

It doesn't stop at foreign policy. Liberals demand a right to privacy, aand want to be able to have abortions on demand. If Speaker Pelosi and Planned Parenthood had their way they would set up an abortion hot-line. Liberals want to have sex and not have to face the consequences if the girl gets pregnant. They act on a narrow emotion and if anything goes wrong they expect to able to abort the baby. No harm, no fowl. Riiiight.

Look at gun control. While I was watching the Democratic YouTube debate, Joe Biden looked like the best candidate on the stage. Then, he showed his true snide liberal colors. He characterized a gun owner as not being "mentally qualified" to own a gun. If Biden and others had their way they would outlaw every handgun, rifle, pellet gun, cap gun, NERF weapon, and super soaker in the country. Then what would happen? The criminals would not only still be armed, but they wouldn't have to worry about getting shot when they broke into a house. Liberals think they are so all-knowing on all issues that they apply their narrow minded logic to the entire country. Would Biden disarm the secret service that protects him? I don't think so.

Liberals really do believe "if it feels good, do it". They act on narrow emotions that appeal to their narrow view of the world. They don't care about consequences. They loath having to account for their actions. Conservatives view of the world is much more long term and broader in scope. They are closer to ordinary people and don't impose an elitist ideology on normal people. A world without consequence would be nice, but no matter how much liberals believe in it, it doesn't exist.

Who Needs the 1st and 2nd Amendments Anyway?

My professors always told me never to begin a paper with a definition, but I think sometimes it might be appropriate. The definition of a liberal is: favorable to or in accord with concepts of maximum individual freedom possible, esp. as guaranteed by law and secured by governmental protection of civil liberties. Does that sound like today’s liberals? Liberals today would like nothing more than to silence opposing political speech on the airwaves and confiscate every firearm in the country (if you are a liberal reading this, opposing political speech and owning firearms are both protected by the law). I would like to take a look at those oh so outdated and anachronistic 1st and 2nd Amendments.

Let’s start with the first amendment (you know that one about free speech). Much has been said about how unfair the fairness doctrine is, but that doesn’t stop leading libs from jumping on board. During a radio interview, John Kerry said that the doctrine should return and that its absence has allowed conservatives to “squeeze out opinion of opposing views”. Isn’t “squeezing out opinion of opposing views” the very thing the fairness doctrine will do? Here is some news for John Kerry: the absence of the fairness doctrine has given people the choice not to listen to your illogical, depressing liberal viewpoints. How many votes away from being president was Kerry?

He isn’t the only one. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin said plainly, “It’s time to reinstitute the Fairness Doctrine”. Among the others are: Steny Hoyer, Nancy Pelosi, and Dianne Feinstein. Dennis Kucinich also wants it back, but after he supported slavery reparations for black people at the Democratic debate I see this as a move to the right. I’d like to give some insight into what the fairness doctrine is like in action. Here is a quote from Bill Ruder, former assistant secretary of commerce under JFK, "Our massive strategy was to use the fairness doctrine to challenge and harass the right wing broadcasters, and hope that challenges would be so costly to them that they would be inhibited and decide it was too costly too continue". Hmmmmm.

Next, how about that second amendment? The latest defender of the right to bear arms is Joe Biden. At the Democratic debate he mocked a gun owner as not being “mentally qualified” to own a gun. Oh and what is “mentally qualified” by your standard Senator? Would turning in my gun for a hybrid car make me more qualified? The truth is senator, judging by your remarks, I don’t think your “mentally qualified” to be president. However, by the off chance that you do get elected president I hope you will disarm your secret service because we all know that people who use guns have a better chance at hurting themselves than the person their shooting. In fact, forget about being President, you can tell your armed body guards now that in order to be “mentally qualified” you should negotiate with a criminal instead of defending yourself. Or maybe the Senator thinks that only the powerful people in government should be able to protect themselves with guns while all the rest of us get our knives and forks taken away from us at the kids table? In any case, the sneering laughter from the crowd, and the look on Biden’s face was enough to make me turn the debate off.

It amazes me the same people who want full constitutional rights for the terrorists at Guantanamo Bay also want to reinstitute the fairness doctrine to limit political speech. Oh liberals! I can’t wait for the report to come out saying how guns contribute to global warming. I guess it makes sense that liberals don’t want people to have guns because they have never liked defending themselves, or their country. With their “big new ideas”, as Senator Obama puts it, it seems like government is going to keep getting bigger, and deciding more things for us. I think we should start calling them socialists not liberals. The new definition of a liberal: liberal- see socialist.

We Can Never Have Too Much Hitler

Hitler this, or Hitler that. A friend of mine told me he's had it with hearing everything and everyone compared to Adolph Hitler. I can understand his frustration. Both sides use Hitler and WW2 for their own political purposes. It seems like any liberal who can't formulate a coherent argument against the President calls him Hitler. To me the comparison is breath-taking; it's almost fun for liberals.

Here are two examples of liberal Hitlermania that I can remember recently. MoveOn.org put together a video on its website comparing President Bush to Hitler. Senator Keith Ellison likened the President to Hitler and compared September 11th to the Reichstag fire.

However, liberals aren't the only ones using Hitler for political purposes. Conservatives go on and on about the 2008 Olympics as China's "coming out party" and compare it to the 1936 Olympics in Nazi Germany. Conservatives also compare the appeasement of Iran and the inaction of the global community to their pursuit of nuclear weapons to Nazi Germany.

While both sides will use Hitler for their own purposes, only the conservative's comparison makes any sense. So in the spirit of WW2 comparisons I would like to make my own that i haven't heard expressed, but have no doubt that it has been expressed.

Looking to the future of Iraq and the current situation in Iran, it is easy to see what liberals are trying and will try to do: they want to scare America away from using military force because of Iraq. In the aftermath of WWI the European powers were so devastated by the war that it drove them to appease Hitler until war was already upon them. While Iraq can in no way be compared to the amount of devastation caused by WWI, I do think it is worth noting the timidity that come out of post-WWI Europe, and will come out of post-Iraq if we don't win.

We must win in Iraq. Liberals will beat America over the head with the Iraq War again and again, just like they do with Vietnam. If America loses it's balls post-Iraq we won't be able to take on enemies such as Iran until its too late. We can't wait until Iran wants "breathing room" and Israel is a smoldering crater. We must win in Iraq and act now to, at the very least, destroy Iran's capability for nuclear weapons.

Running + Sarkozy = FASCISM!

Leave it to the French to think that running is another form of American cultural imperialism. The reaction by the French to President Sarkozy running strikes a chord with me because I myself am an avid runner.

I am a D1 track athlete and personally love the fact that Sarkozy enjoys running. However, I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around the rejection of running by the French liberals and elites. Who could find running threatening? It's exercise! Aren't these the same people who loath the fat and lazy American? Who's fat and lazy now?

I think the reaction by French liberals to President Sarkozy's running hobby shows how uncomfortable and on edge they are after Royal's defeat. The liberals are so on edge that they could find running threatening! If liberals would embrace running maybe the conservatives wouldn't beat them in the presidential race next time.

Assuming Sarkozy's running isn't an elaborate scheme to brainwash people into being goose stepping Fascists, it does show me something about the President. Running is a very trying test of physical, as well as mental strength. It is also a very individualized and empowering kind of exercise that pits a man against himself. Sarkozy seems to appreciate this, and my admiration for him grows. I wonder who would win in a race: Clinton or Sarkozy?

Competition in Education

"Competition is best left on the sports field", this couldn't be more false. The statement itself disproves the argument that it's making. It implies that competition is a positive for sports and helps people perform better. Competition drives American innovation. If competition is such a fundamental principle of American life, then why isn't it being promoted in education instead of progressive cooperation?

Let me tell you about my experience with "cooperation" as a public school student.

All the students form a circle with their chairs to discuss a topic. The teacher tells us she "can't ask questions or direct the discussion", and “that’s our job”. We all stare at each other and nothing happens. People form their own side bar conversations and everyone gets off topic. Nothing gets done.

There is no discipline in the classroom. The standards get lower and lower, because instead of challenging students, teachers like to pass as many as they can. Kids get away with whatever they want because the teachers have no presence. They have no control over the classroom, and when the failing kids complain about their grade, the teacher gives them a pass.

Public school is a joke. The opportunities are there for the student who wants to go and get them, but students are not encouraged to go after them. Instead, they take the easy way out. Students are told its ok to take track 3 classes. Track three? Make these kids work hard and get smarter! I had trouble keeping my head from exploding every day from the circus that is public school

The problem with education gets worse. The longer the public school system has with students the worse they score on international tests. In 4th grade American students score in the top percentiles in all subjects, but by 12th grade they are in the bottom half percentile.

Of course whenever you talk education with a lib they talk about how under appreciated and under paid teachers are. Bull. Teachers are one of the highest paid professions in the country and the President gives out a  National Teacher of the Year Award. Can you think of any other profession that receives a presidential award every year? However, there is something that teachers are lacking in: control. Teachers need to dispose of this student centered, progressive approach to education. It promotes a dysfunctional, chaotic classroom where the importance of learning is lost on most students. My solution: out with Rousseau, and in with Aristotle.

Rousseau has had a profound impact on the modern educational establishment. He advanced the idea that society corrupts children and that children are the "ideal" until they are molded by the culture. The problem with this is that it ignores that the fact that children are not perfect human beings with self control. They need to be disciplined. When you let the kids run the classroom it ends up like the way I described it: chaotic. Aristotle's view was that students need heavy discipline and guidance. Hey, it worked for hundreds of years, why not now?

Competition is not best left on the sports field. Competition got me through the circus that is public school. I saw every other student as a competitor. No teacher told me to see the world that way. I decided that for my self, and it worked. Teachers should facilitate competition between students. It is no coincidence that American students scoring worse on international tests parallels the implementation of progressive cooperation in education. If we don't act to educate our children better they will start to claim all sorts of constitutional rights that don't exist because they've never had a civics lesson. Oh wait, too late.

If At First You Can't Compete, Legislate, Legislate Away

The liberals are at it again. Here are some of the Democrats who have talked about reinstating the fairness doctrine:

-Nancy Pelosi
-Steny Hoyer
-John Kerry
-Dennis Kucinich
-Dianne Feinstein
-Dick Durbin

This isn't the first time since the abolition of the fairness doctrine that liberals have attempted to bring it back. In 1993 the Democrat controlled Congress realized the impact that Rush Limbaugh was having on the political landscape and sought to reinstate the fairness doctrine. Rush fought back and the Democrats dropped the idea.

Now the libs are once again trying to bring back the fairness doctrine. They have failed to compete on talk radio and want to legislate themselves onto the air waves instead of leaving it up to the free market. I wonder if the libs would want to apply the fairness doctrine to all other mediums of entertainment?

Conservatives have been complaining about a liberal bias in the media, Hollywood, and academia for years. However, conservatives never thought of restricting liberals right to free speech. In fact, Republicans were the ones who abolished the fairness doctrine.

In response to a media dominated by liberals, conservatives did the only thing they could do: compete. Fox News was started in 1996 and has become the top rated cable news network on television. Alternatively, Democrats have responded to a conservative dominated AM radio by propping up Air America. However, unlike Fox News, Air America failed miserably.

Liberals can not compete against conservatives on talk radio and are slowly losing their grip on the television news media. Now, they've abandoned the principles of a free market and are considering reinstating the fairness doctrine to stifle their opposition.

That's the fairness doctrine in action! Liberals? Hardly. Stalin would be proud.
